The Brunswick Veterinary Hospital offers a full range of veterinary services including physical exams, internal medicine, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, dentistry, lab work, radiology, routine preventative care, vaccinations, as well as prescription foods and medications.

We have prepared this pamphlet to give you information about our methods of practice. Please inquire about any area that is not covered in this handout.
REGISTRATION
Enclosed is an Acquaintance Form/Pet Health History Questionnaire, which you should complete and sign at home before your pet’s first visit. You may email this form to us at brunswickveterinaryhospital@gmail.com, fax to 518-244-3290, or please bring this form with you on your first visit.
OFFICE HOURS
Our usual office hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday and Friday, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am to 7:00pm, and every Saturday from 8:00am to 1:00pm. After hours you may leave a message on our answering machine. Please include your name, your pet’s name, your telephone number, and the time. We will get back to you during regular business hours.
We are available for emergencies during normal business hours. In case of emergencies after hours please contact the Upstate Veterinary Referral Center’s ER at 518-783-3198 or the Capital District Veterinary Referral Hospital at 518-785-1094.
APPOINTMENTS
Patients are seen by appointment only. Please call in advance so that a time may be reserved for your pet. We make every effort to be on time and ask that you extend the same courtesy to us. Occasionally a pet may require an extraordinary amount of our time or require immediate emergency care. These situations may cause delays in our schedule, but we will always try to honor your appointment time, or to reschedule your pet to another day. Please know that if your pet ever needs extra treatment or emergency care, we will adjust to his/her needs even if it results in a delay for other patients.
CANCELLATION OF APPOINTMENTS
If you cannot keep an appointment please notify our office by calling 518-279-0700. You may leave a message with our staff or recorded on our answering machine. No charge will be made for missed appointments provided at least 24 hours prior notice is given so that the time reserved for your pet may be made available for other patients.
Failure to keep a scheduled appointment and/or failure to appear at the scheduled appointment time inconveniences many other pets and their owners. Therefore, failure to keep a scheduled appointment without 24 hours’ notice of cancellation may result in a required reservation deposit before another appointment can be made.
EMERGENCIES
Emergencies are accepted anytime that the hospital is open. If at all possible it is best to call before coming in so that a team member can advise you on your particular emergency and notify the doctor on duty that you are on your way.
We are also available for urgent care when the condition is non-life-threatening. We have reserved a special time daily to see urgent care patients. If your pet has a problem requiring treatment please call as early in the day as possible. In order to maintain a reasonable schedule during the day, emergencies, except trauma, can be seen only during the time set aside for that purpose. Accidents and life threatening emergencies are always treated upon arrival.

TELEPHONE CALLS
It would be unfair for the doctor to leave a pet during treatment to answer telephone calls therefore our office staff and veterinary technicians have been trained to answer most questions, or to relay answers to you. If they are unable to answer your questions, we will return your call as soon as possible but sometimes this may not be until late in the evening, or even the following day.
FEES AND PAYMENTS
Payment is expected at the time of your visit. Several methods of payment are available: Cash, Check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover Card, or Care Credit are all accepted.
A late fee of $35 is applied to all accounts after 30 days. If valid payment is not made (i.e. no payment, bad check, etc), any further appointments must be paid for with cash or money order. If collection efforts are required a collection fee of $35 (minimum) will be added to the total amount due. A $35 fee will be added to all checks returned for insufficient funds and payment will be required in the form of cash or money order.
Collection of funds will be pursued (with appropriate fees) on any balances 30 days past due.
PRESCIPTION REQUESTS
We are more than happy to provide a written script for any medications that you wish to purchase outside of our practice. Please kindly give us 24 hours to fulfill your request. Unfortunately, due to New York State law we do have to provide your prescription on official New York prescription pad paper and cannot accept a faxed or emailed request from the pharmacy. We will call you when your script is ready to be picked up, or we can mail you your copy, whichever is more convenient.
You can also purchase medications from our store which can be found on the tab at the top of our website: www.brunswickveterinaryhospital.com. When purchasing via this method we can electronically approve your script and your medication will still maintain all manufacturer’s warrantees.
ABOUT OUR DOCTORS
Dr. Nicole LaMora
Dr. Nicole L. LaMora, owner of the Brunswick Veterinary Hospital, attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a B.S. Degree in Animal Science in 1996. After several years working as a Diet’s Specialist for the El Paso Texas Zoo, and also as a Customs Inspector and dog handler for the Department of Homeland Security Dr. LaMora was admitted to Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.
As a veterinary practitioner, Dr. LaMora’s top priority is to provide quality care to her patients. She likes helping people and pets with their problems and enjoys the detective work that goes into the more difficult to solve cases. Equally important to her are the relationships she creates with both her patients and their owners, and she enjoys helping to strengthen the bond we have with our pets.
Dr. LaMora is married to her husband of 21 years, Brandon and they are proud parents of a very active five year old. They also currently share their house with 2 dogs, 2 cats, 5 horses, 1 donkey, and 3 goats! She enjoys horseback riding, cross stitching, reading, and spending time with family, friends, and pets.
Dr. Kaitlin Quirk
Dr. Kaitlin Quirk is originally from Guilderland, New York. She attended Cornell University receiving her undergraduate degree in 2009 and her veterinary degree in 2013. Following graduation, she did a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery and then worked in a general practice in Manhattan. She moved back to the Capital Region in the fall of 2016 and joined the Brunswick Veterinary Hospital in the spring of 2018.
Aside from her medical interests, Dr. Quirk enjoys reading, travel, horseback riding and all things Disney. She also enjoys relaxing with family and friends, including her cat Melody and her horse Rocky.
Dr. Heather Burrowes
Dr. Heather Burrowes is originally from Long Island, New York but has made the Capital District her home for many years. She graduated from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2012 and has been a small animal general practitioner ever since, with a special emphasis on pain management, sports medicine, dermatology and internal medicine. She became certified in veterinary acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in 2019, and loves being able to use this skill to improve quality of life for all kinds of patients, from active working dogs to elderly indoor cats.
In her spare time, Dr. Burrowes is actively involved in the local dog sports community with her two Poodles, Audie and Blue, who participate in everything from competition obedience to scent work and anything else that looks like fun! She is also an avid cook and gardener, and enjoys spending most of the summer either digging in the dirt or canning what it produces.

History of the Newaygo area:
The City of Newaygo is the oldest community in Newaygo County. The Penoyer and Brooks families were among the first settlers to the Newaygo area. They founded Newaygo’s first saw mill known as the “Big Red Mill”. The rail service came through Newaygo in 1873, connecting the city with metropolitan Grand Rapids, Chicago, and Detroit. In 1883 a massive fire destroyed Newaygo, leaving only two buildings standing. The late Victorian architectural influence existing today was the focus when rebuilding the city after the tragic fire. The proximity of the Muskegon River was the driving force of Newaygo’s early economy, causing mills, lumbering, and recreation to develop nearby and within. Here in Newaygo it is our goal to capitalize on this heritage and create a city that is appealing for its rich historical values and culture.
Over the last 10 years the City of Newaygo has made many improvements to help the city grow. The downtown area which was once completely dilapidated with empty storefronts, unmaintained buildings and inadequate parking has become a highlight for entrepreneurs. Through federal grant dollars the city was able to renovate the entire downtown. Parking lots are easily accessible, buildings have been given a new face and there are very few vacant storefronts. The downtown district has become the Principal Shopping District (PSD) for the Newaygo Community. The intent of the PSD is to create and retain a vibrant, attractive and cohesive center for the City of Newaygo with a variety of quality places to work, live, shop, learn, recreate, and be entertained. Our goal is to recognize and support the Principal Shopping District as the centerpiece of the greater Newaygo community. Make sure to take the time to walk downtown and meet your neighborhood business owners.
Municipal Services:
Through a contract with A – Waste Inc, the City offers a bulk trash pickup for large unwanted items the first Tuesday of every month. With that, we also offer a leaf and brush pick up every spring and fall, curbside or bagged. Bags can be picked up at City Hall when needed. All of these services are free to the residents of the City of Newaygo.
If you are in need of crushed concrete, mulch, stone, or topsoil the City provides and delivers them to your home within the city. For prices, contact City Hall at the number below.

- All lawn grass should be no longer than six inches.
- Garage/yard sales are not to take place unless a permit is acquired from City Hall.
- Waste receptacles and recycling bins should not be left on the side of the street for more than 12 hours before and after pickup.
- A permit must be acquired before any changes or additions to the footprint and the general exterior of your home are made.
- A permit must be obtained before construction or installation of a new accessory building on your lot.

A: There are many ways of paying your water/sewer bill.
- You can come to city hall Monday through Friday between 7:30am and 4:00pm, paying by cash, check or credit card.

If you are considering owning commercial real estate or operating a business (or both) in the City of Newaygo there are many issues to be aware of that will vary depending on your plan. It would be wise to contact the city and request a pre-development meeting where a number of departments can be present to begin a comprehensive planning process that will bring about a smooth outcome.
The City of Newaygo offers two separate areas within the city limits for entrepreneurs: The Principal Shopping District (PSD) located at the bottom of the hill closest to the Muskegon River and the Uptown Business District located at the top of the hill, extending to the southern city limits. Both districts are explained further in the following pages.
Principal Shopping District (PSD)
The intent of the PSD is to retain and create a vibrant, attractive and cohesive center for the City of Newaygo with a variety of quality places to work, live, shop, learn, recreate, and be entertained.
The PSD has special regulations focused on the implementation of goals and objectives. Most important of those goals is the development of a compact, walkable, mixed-use district, consisting of a variety of retail, entertainment, office, service, residential, cultural, recreation and municipal uses.
To provide for the desired traditional downtown environment and accommodate the wide variety of permitted uses, this district includes specific design standards for site layout, setback continuity, building design, pedestrian amenities, parking arrangement, vehicular circulation and coordination of site features between adjoining sites. It is the intent of this district to prohibit automotive related services and non-retail uses that tend to disrupt the continuity of the retail frontage.
Due to the density of development in the Downtown, there is a need for consolidated and shared services in order to maintain the beauty and character of the area. These shared services are funded by a quarterly fee paid by all property owners or tenants located within the downtown Principal Shopping District. The shared services include snow removal on sidewalks, public parking lots, garbage removal, maintenance on dumpsters and enclosures, maintenance of public parking lot surfaces and walk ways, lighting, among many other benefits.
Before any changes are made to the exterior of a building or a sign within this district and approval is needed from not only the City of Newaygo, but also the PSD Board.

Uptown Business District:
As you head North through Newaygo you will be welcomed by the uptown business district. The uptown business district is filled with prime store frontage for an array of business types. This district is not within a Principal Shopping District there are certain amenities that are not offered to store owners/renters. For example, in the Uptown Business District you are not subject to a quarterly fee, but you are responsible for your own snow and trash removal along with parking lot maintenance. Within this district it takes the involvement of every store front owner and tenant to keep the district welcoming. With the help of all business owners, this district is a pleasant experience for shopping and dining.
Industrial Park District:
This district is intended for intensive industrial activity, including manufacturing, assembly, and packing. It is also intended to permit related businesses and services while prohibiting retail sales, residential dwellings, and other incompatible uses. This district is designed to promote high quality industrial development through the use of industrial performance standards and other regulations contained in Chapter 17 of Newaygo City Zoning Code of Ordinance.

The Newaygo Area is served by the River Country Chamber of Commerce. Their mission is to create a supportive business environment through community leadership, promotion, inclusive business advocacy and valued customer service.
Membership in the chamber provides a number of important benefits including an effective means of promoting your business and networking opportunities with community and business leaders. Additionally, all chamber members receive a $100.00 credit to The Stream in Downtown Newaygo. The Stream is a great place for meetings and networking with other business owners of the area.

Simple Reminders
Please be aware that many of the City of Newaygo permits and applications require review and a set fee to be paid. Please research any costs you may incur during the process of business development by reviewing the city fee schedule located on our website, www.newaygocity.org under the “For Business” tab. Also, allow ample time for creation of your plans and review by the city.
Listed below are some reminders to check into before opening your business.
A. Zoning
a. Zoning Permits – The first thing to consider is whether the use you are planning in a certain location is permitted within the City of Newaygo zoning ordinance. You will find a copy of the Newaygo zoning ordinances at www.newaygocity.org, under forms and publications.
b. Site Plan Review – If alternations to the site or building are planned than a sufficiently detailed site plan must be submitted to the Zoning Administrator with the zoning application for review. A simple site plan is usually sufficient for change of use on an existing building.
c. Signage – The City of Newaygo also regulates the signs placed in front and around your store front. For the Principal Shopping District all signs must also be approved by the regulating board. B. Important Ordinance Information
a. Most permanent signs require a permit from the City. If you are unsure about whether or not your sign will require a permit be sure to check Chapter 5 of the zoning ordinance.
b. If you wish to have temporary signs representing your business you must follow the general sign provisions, Chapter 5, Section 5.03 of the zoning ordinance. This sections reads;
i. “No person shall erect, alter, place or permit to be placed, or replace any sign without first obtaining a zoning permit, provided the following signs shall not require a zoning permit: Temporary signs of four (4) square feet or less in area (One [1] per street frontage per business. Sign shall not be displayed for more than 60 days in a calendar year.)”
c. A zoning compliance form must be filled out and approved before any business can enter a building within the City of Newaygo. This form and other forms may be obtained on the city’s website under the government tab.
C. Building Permits and Inspections
Before embarking on any renovations, construction, electrical or plumbing projects, please confirm whether the projects you are undertaking require a building permit. Most construction related projects require a permit. For further questions, visit the city’s website or call the Building Inspector. 231.224.3960.
D. Fire Issues
The City of Newaygo is served by the Newaygo Fire Department. Prior to businesses being opened it is necessary for the building to be inspected by the Fire Chief to ensure that the space meets the fire code. To contact the Newaygo Fire Department, call 231.652.7788, if you are unable to reach the Fire Department then feel free to contact the City Hall.
E. Trash and Snow Removal
If your business is located in the Principal Shopping District, trash service and snow removal are included in your quarterly fees. Businesses located uptown are responsible for their own trash service and snow removal.
F. Police Protection
The City of Newaygo is served by the Newaygo Police Department. If you have a non emergency related issue or a general question about theft, fraud, or counterfeit money, you are encouraged to call the Newaygo Police Department at 231.652.1655. In cases of emergency always dial 911.
G. Food Related Businesses: County Health Department
If you are preparing, serving, or selling food products be sure to contact the Newaygo County Health Department at 231.689.7382 to ensure that you are meeting all of the requirements to keep your food service safe and open to the public.
H. Downtown Businesses with attached Apartments
If you own or are renting a downtown business with an apartment attached, be sure to register as a landlord and have your apartments inspected; there is a fee for this. Send all new tenants to City Hall for a parking permit. This permit is free, but they must have it in their vehicle to avoid parking citations.

You are sure to find good neighbors doing business both downtown and uptown in Newaygo. In order to ensure smooth relations, we ask your cooperation regarding the following issues.
Uptown District:
Snow Shoveling – Please keep the snow shoveled on the walks adjacent to your property. Keeping the snow cleared in front (or behind) of your business ensures that when others do the same the entire uptown area will be easy to navigate. If your business is located in the Principal Shopping District this service is provided to you through your quarterly fees to the city.
Sidewalk/Terrace Maintenance – It is the responsibility of the property owner/tenant to keep the sidewalks in and around your area clear of all barriers, trash, and weeds. If we all keep up our appearances, we’ll have a well maintained uptown.
Trash Removal – Please pick up the trash that is dropped on your property or blows in the wind. With the help of everyone in the area paying close attention to this issue the image of the entire town will be seen as clean and trash problems will not accumulate. This service is provided to the Principal Shopping District through quarterly fees paid to the city.
Both Uptown and Downtown Districts:
Employee Parking – Please encourage tenant and employee parking in places which are not prime parking for your/or other businesses in the downtown and uptown areas. It may be inconvenient for you, your employees, and your tenant’s to walk longer distances to their place of work, but the benefit to customers of the district will be invaluable.
